Canned butter and cheese

Ordered some canned butter and canned cheese a while back......pretty decent stuff and apparently has a long shelf life.

Ran into another site that sells it today, and am ordering some more from them...

http://www.mredepot.com/servlet/StoreFront

They currently have a 10% off sale, you enter (take10) in the promo code box at checkout and it recalculates your total.

The other place to buy this ( and they put a one week sale on butter this morning, probably in response to competition ) is Internet Grocer.

I got some of the cheese. It is between velveeta and real cheese whatever they say, but a big step up from cheese powder. Especially for melting uses like mac and cheese, home made pizza, toasted cheese, etc. For that I think it will be great. Thin sliced it will be as good as those sandwich slices, but it is not like real cheddar either.

I'm going to get some of the butter, I think.

Canned butter would be welcome to my preps also... Does anybody know where one could buy quality canned goods and freeze-dried food in bulk from Europe? America might be up for some suffering but you wise guys :) have it easier in there with all those emergency food suppliers.

Goddess, please post or PM me info about what kinds of things you're ordering. I joined the group but it is waiting for approval. Hopefully all the info I'm looking for can be found on there?

Not being that familiar with canned cheese (except for the Cougar cheeses from Washington) and butter, what's their shelf life if refrigerated - or not?

Re: Canned butter and cheese

The cheese I got and butter I read about is a product of New Zealand in ordinary cans. The cheese is Kraft brand and the butter Red Feather, I think. They say to import into the US they have to state a shelf life, but have not determined how long past that it lasts. The links will probably say, but I think they said officially 3 years, their guess, indefinate.

It is intended for places lacking refrigeration and said to be used in the hot outback a lot.

The cans are a bit larger than tuna cans and a thing I especially like is that the cheese has not been dyed yellow. It is white.

I think Andy tried the butter and noticed they salt it less.

Each can is stamped with a Best By date of 05/07, which is required by the FDA in order to import it into the US, but this cheese has no expiration date according to the spec provided by Kraft. This batch of cheese was manufactured in January of 2006 and will store for many years. No one is sure for exactly how many - they've never tested it just for longevity. It's packaged this way in Australia and in the Middle East for folks who don't have refrigeration, like many in the outback or in third world countries. The manufacturer is confident it will last "indefinitely". Since it's in a sterile environment, air can't circulate so germs can't get to it - there's no reason that it can't store indefinitely. Just keep it as cool as you can (protect from freezing). And once it's opened, it's best to refrigerate any leftovers, though it will most likely last a few more days in a zipper-locking baggie or tinfoil without refrigeration.
What one linked site says.

For the first time in our history of offering MREs, canned and freeze dried foods, we have found a canned butter that is imported from New Zealand that actually tastes better than any gourmet butter we had ever tried and with an indefinite shelf life, no refrigeration is necessary!!

GREAT FOR CAMPING! PERFECT FOR THE BOAT OR RV!

For years we've had people ask us about storable butter, and we've had to turn them away. Now you can have smooth, creamy, high-quality butter . . . and who cares if the electricity goes off??

And the best part (besides the great taste), is the list of ingredients; Pasteurized Cream and Salt thats it!! No preservatives, food colorings or chemicals of any kind, just naturally made wholesome butter from down under.
I think calling it gourmet is like calling the canned velveeta delicious. Andy is on target with 'decent'. But I do like the lack of junky additives. And decent is how I'd rate it too.

Yep.....one of them is always named "hamburger"...... :haha: :haha:

(I guess you could milk a beef cow, but I wouldn't want to be the one to train it)

AM for PM:

Yes, I'd call the butter 'decent'.....wouldn't call it 'goumet'. Has a different taste to what we get here, but not objectionable to me.....just differrent. Used in cooking, I can't tell any difference......spread on breads, alone like toast, I can taste the difference.....solution ?......more strawberry jam !

The cheese about the same.....it's cheese, but it's not quite the cheese I'm used to.

BUT, given the choice of neither or these, I'll definitely take these.

That's easy, if you need a little milk, then the answer is you need a little cow:

...And a really big litter box.
